Rowntree Factory
This five storey building in York was constructed in the 1890s, with several large production floors, offices and medical room. Modern methods of confectionery manufacturing reduced the need for the additional production space, and the associated workers. When I visited, It had been out of use since 2010. The site has since been developed into housing, known as The Cocoa Works.

Standing alone in an area of rubble, it used to be surrounded by other factory buildings, and had found itself being the only one to survive demolition. A family connection to this building made this visit a little more poignant. My Dad worked for Rowntree, which then became Nestlé, and he was located at the Haxby Road offices during the 1980s, 1990s and early 2000s. Hearing his stories and memories of the now derelict building provided context that I often am not privy to when visiting these abandoned sites.
